Part I - The Greek Diaries : Exploring Athens & Santorini

May 2024 : There was a 5 day public holiday in France during May 2024 and I took this opportunity to back my bags to Greece. I was always fascinated by this country and Greece, often referred to as the "Land of Wise Men," is renowned for its rich philosophical heritage and contributions to Western thought. Ancient philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle laid the foundations of philosophy, ethics, and science. The country's breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture further enhance its appeal, making Greece a timeless destination. I also realised that Trigonometry ( the subject that I developed a phobia for during school times) originated in Greece.

Day 1

Acropolis

I took a direct flight from Paris to Athens and reached there around 14h00 PM local time. The taxi from the airport wasn’t too expensive , so I took one to get to the Acropolis. It was a bit strange to see trigonometry symbols such as α (alpha), β (beta), γ (gamma), θ (theta) etc.. everywhere and it struck to me that it was actually the Greek language. It took me a while to get used to it. The drive to the city centre was refreshing especially with the beautiful Greek landscape welcoming you.

After having a quick lunch , I was off to the world renowned marvel – The Acropolis. I had seen it only on television and history books but knew that this monument was an architectural marvel. The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel perched on a rocky outcrop, famous for its classical architecture and historical significance. Dominating the skyline, it includes iconic structures like the Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena, and the Erechtheion, known for its Caryatids. Built in the 5th century BCE during the Golden Age of Athens, the Parthenon showcases remarkable Doric architecture and intricate sculptures, symbolizing the cultural and political power of ancient Athens.

The ancient Theatre of Dionysus, located below the Acropolis in Athens, is one of the earliest stone theatres, dating back to the 5th century BCE. It hosted dramatic performances and festivals honoring Dionysus (The God of wine-making & fertility)

The Acropolis served as a religious center and a symbol of democracy, influencing art, architecture, and philosophy throughout history. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting millions of visitors who come to marvel at its enduring beauty and explore the rich history of ancient Greece.

Day 2

Ferry ride to Santorini

Taking the ferry from Piraeus to Santorini takes about 5 hours. As the vessel departs, you glide across the Aegean Sea, surrounded by stunning views of shimmering blue waters and picturesque islands. The sea reminded me of Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea. Often depicted with a trident, he wielded power over oceans and storms, symbolizing both the nurturing and destructive forces of nature. He was revered by sailors seeking safe passage across turbulent waters.

The ferry typically stops at several ports, including Mykonos and Naxos, allowing travelers to glimpse the beauty of these Cycladic islands. Although I had a comfortable seat indoors, I opted to stay on deck for the entire journey. The fresh sea breeze and panoramic vistas of the islands passing by were too captivating to miss. Watching the rugged cliffs and whitewashed buildings of the Cyclades emerge in the distance heightened my anticipation for Santorini.

Plaka

Plaka is a charming historic neighborhood in Athens, nestled at the foot of the Acropolis. Known for its narrow, winding streets and vibrant atmosphere, Plaka is often referred to as the "Neighborhood of the Gods." Visitors can explore traditional Greek tavernas, quaint shops, and lively cafes, all while surrounded by beautiful neoclassical architecture. The area is rich in history, with ancient ruins and remnants of Roman and Byzantine structures integrated into the modern landscape. Plaka is also a hub for cultural experiences, featuring artisan markets and local events, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in the essence of Athens.

After relaxing a bit , I set out on a hike to the famous blue dome of Santorini. The trail began pleasantly, winding through a picturesque landscape dotted with luxury hotels and charming shops, each showcasing the island’s opulence. The white Greek-style buildings glistened in the sun, their domes and arches reflecting the island's traditional architecture.

Upscale restaurants offered tantalizing menus, their terraces boasting breathtaking views of the caldera. Guests lounged in infinity pools, soaking up the sun while sipping cocktails, creating a scene of sheer indulgence. Despite the luxurious surroundings, the path was inviting making it easy to navigate. Each hotel or spa that I saw seemed to have its own unique charm

However, as I continued my hike, the landscape began to shift. The initial path of luxury and elegance gradually transitioned into a more rugged terrain. The smooth walkways gave way to rocky trails, and the sounds of civilization faded, replaced by the natural chorus of the island. This transformation reminded me that Santorini is a land of contrasts, where opulence meets the raw beauty of nature.

The hike took about 3,5 hours , and with each turn, I found myself captivated by breathtaking vistas of the caldera. Finally, as I approached the iconic blue dome, the view was worth every step. Reaching the blue dome was a moment of triumph, and I took time to soak in the beauty surrounding me. With the sun setting over the horizon, I felt a profound connection to this magical island, making this hike one of the highlights of my journey

Santorini – Hike to the famous Blue Domes

Upon arriving at the port of Santorini, I hopped on a mini bus to my hostel, Caveland. This unique cave-style accommodation offered a fresh take on hostelling. Just the ambience itself puts you in a good mood instantaneously and the hostel had a ''mediterranean charm'' with it's contrasting colours and aura . I highly recommend this place for budget travellers.
